A major data provider for most Nigerian banks, MainOne on Thursday suffered a major fibre cut in Ghana that caused an outage for many major Nigerian banks offline.
The incident was disclosed in an internal communication sent to bank staff, according to TechCabal.
This has thrown customers of Nigerian banks into turmoil leading to lack of access for banking apps or use any USSD service.
“A technical team is actively working on a solution,” someone familiar with MainOne’s business told TechCabal.
A spokesperson for MainOne declined to comment on the situation.
The Internet outage goes beyond Nigeria, with internet users in South Africa also experiencing low internet connectivity, according to news24.
Telecommunications company, Vodacom confirmed cases of multiple subsea cable failures between South Africa and Europe which has impacted many users.
Meanwhile Wema, Sterling and other banks have responded in the wake of the outage.
“You might be experiencing downtime while to log into the ALAT app. We are fully aware of the situation and guarantee this would be resolved in the shortest time possible. We sincerely regret and apologize for all inconvenience this is causing.” Wema said in a statement.
Similarly, Sterling Bank said, “We are aware that you may be experiencing difficulties trying to transfer funds, reach our customer care team, or transact via USSD and genuinely apologize for the effect of this on your day,”

Customers have been urged to exercise patience while the issue is resolved.
