Mark Zuckerberg closes in on Elon Musk, gains $54bn in 2024

Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth soared by $54 billion in 2024, bringing him closer to Elon Musk, the third richest man in the world, according to Bloomberg data.

The rise in Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth can be linked to Meta’s surging share price which currently trades at $485.45 per share. Mark Zuckerberg is currently close to overtaking Elon Musk for the first time since 2020.

Mark Zuckerberg has a net worth of $182 billion, just $7 billion less than Elon Musk’s net worth of $189 billion as of Friday’s closing. The net worth hasn’t changed as of the time of filing this report.

Mark Zuckerberg has never been richer than Tesla CEO Elon Musk since November 2020.

Most of Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth comes from his 13% stake in Meta, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Thanks to a number of new stringent measures put in place by Mark Zuckerberg and his team, their shares have increased by 43 per cent this year.

At the same time, Tesla’s stock is down 29% and Elon Musk has lost more than $40 billion of his fortune.

LVMH chief Bernard Arnault and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have both overtaken Musk on the Bloomberg index this year with Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg lining up to be the next.

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg’s rivalry intensified when Mark Zuckerberg launched “Threads “a text-based app on Instagram in response to Elon Musk buying Twitter now known as X for $44bn in October 2022; Threads was meant to rival X but it is failing at the moment.

The two billionaires had promised in 2022 to settle their differences in a live cage match which would be broadcast on social media.

The idea of a cage match was first posted by Musk over Twitter, where the Tesla CEO responded to a thread about Instagram’s then-upcoming rival app Threads, saying, “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.”

Zuckerberg responded the next day with an Instagram story showing a screenshot of Musk’s tweet captioned “send me location”—a reference to a famous line from former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Bernard Arnault remains the world’s richest man with a net worth of $201 billion, followed by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos with a net worth of $198 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
