The Federal Government announced plans to commence train services on the Port Harcourt to Aba route by the end of March, according to Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation.
During a visit to Port Harcourt for a test run on the recently reconstructed Eastern Narrow Gauge Rail line, Okhiria stated that the tracks are in the final stages of preparation to ensure comprehensive train operations within the next month.
“We are pushing the contractor to make the track safe by deploying semi-automatic signaling of the machine points rather than manual operation,” Okhiria expressed optimism about the contractor completing the track ‘tampering’ process in the next two weeks, aiming to restart train services within the projected three-week period.
In addition to the ongoing project, Okhiria mentioned the design of a railway track linking the Port Harcourt-Aba railroad line with the Onne seaport.
The Nigeria Railway Corporation is collaborating with the terminal manager of the port and top engineers to ensure the seamless execution of the project.
Okhiria addressed the possibility of increased transport fares due to rising diesel costs, stating that if the Nigeria Railway Corporation cannot cover the full fuel cost, it would aim to recover at least 50% of these costs from passenger fares for operational sustainability. Additionally, road conditions would be evaluated to cover at least 50% of those costs.
Emphasizing safety and security, Okhiria highlighted government efforts in collaboration with relevant security agencies. Security devices on trains will be integrated with the control room for enhanced monitoring.
Okhiria warned traders along the rail lines that trains would adhere to a strict schedule, operating at fixed times to improve efficiency and reliability. Trains will no longer decelerate to allow the removal of goods before passing.
