The Secretary for Education in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, has announced the approval of N7 billion to settle 25% of teachers’ late salary arrears in public primary schools.
According to The Times, Hayyo made the statement during a familiarization visit to the FCT Universal Basic Education Board’s management on Thursday in Abuja.
He stated that the FCTA will cover 40% of the late arrears, leaving the other 60% to be paid by the Area Councils.
Furthermore, he stated that the Administration has instructed the Area Councils and the FCT to make the payment within a three-month period, stressing that the funds will be removed at the source and transferred to them.
“The purpose of this visit is to see how the secretariat can work with the Board to achieve its objective and I am grateful to God that the Board receives counterpart financing in addition to the BESDA account.
“I promise that the available resources from UBEC and UBEB will be used to address the challenges,” Hayyo said in a press release.
Further, Hayyo stated that despite having a board with over 1000 schools, there is still a shortage of teachers.
According to him, the administration is looking into the issues in order to find a solution.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT Universal Basic Education, Dr. Alhassan Sule, informed the Education Secretary that the board has nine departments and four critical units.
Sule stated that the Ako Girls’ Secondary School, as well as the board’s special schools, were established to boost girl child education.
He then advised the Education Secretary of the Board’s collaboration with NGOs to develop schools in the FCT.
