The Corporate Affairs Commission plans to remove 91,843 companies from its register for failing to file annual returns.
Nairametrics reported that the commission submitted the names of 91,843 companies for delisting in a list that was made available on its website.
This is 2,738 less names of companies than the 94,581 names it released in August.
Additionally, it is fewer than the first 100,000 businesses that CAC promised to remove in a previous statement.
The Registrar-General and CEO of the CAC, Garba Abubakar, announced in July that the commission would remove 100,000 registered businesses from its database due to their failure to file annual returns.
Abubakar stated at the time that the commission would send notice of striking off to the companies that would be impacted before taking the action that is required by section 692 of the CAMA, 2020.
In an update on December 5, CAC said: “In addition to its previous notice, which was published on August 2, 2023, regarding the start of the process of removing company names from the Register of Companies, the Commission hereby notifies the public that the list of companies that have not filed current annual returns in accordance with the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 requirements is now prepared for publication in compliance with Section 692 of the Act.
“It is recommended that companies that submitted their complete annual returns in response to the previous publication verify their removal from the list of companies that will be struck off. The website of the Commission has the most recent list that is ready for publication.”
Businesses that filed complete annual returns but are still on the list, according to the CAC, should email [email protected] with evidence of filing within 30 days.
It further stated that until the Federal High Court orders that a company’s name be added back to the register, the company that had its name removed from the register of companies is unable to conduct business.
