Elon Musk has disclosed that users of X, formerly known as Twitter will soon be able to call one another without needing a phone number.
The majority of platforms, including iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows, will support the feature.
Video and audio calls will soon be available on the platform, with X serving as the “effective global address book,” according to a post by Musk on X. It might imply that users won’t need to save their phone numbers and can call one another by checking up their username.
In an interview with CNBC earlier this month, X CEO Linda Yaccarino affirmed that the platform is attempting to offer the functionality.
Additionally, X has put restrictions in place to stop spam calls, but it’s possible that the platform will bar non-premium customers from using specific services.
Making calls on X could help the platform stand out from competitors like Threads and Bluesky.
The decision appears to be in keeping with Musk’s goal of making X become a feature-rich app similar to WeChat. Musk has not yet specified when the feature will be accessible to all users or whether it will only be available to Blue subscribers.
