Google’s first director for West Africa, Dr. Juliet Ehimuan, has announced her retirement from the firm.
She made this announcement on LinkedIn on Friday, where she also stated her desire to pursue a wider position within the local IT scene.
Dr. Ehimuan previously held the position of Country Director for Nigeria at Google before being appointed to the position of West Africa Director.
Over 6 million Africans were successfully trained in digital skills by the Google team in Africa during her tenure as Director. Additionally, 100,000 developers were trained in web and mobile development, and a Google for Startups accelerator dedicated to African startups was launched.
Important access projects were also carried out under Ehimuan’s direction, such as the extension of the Google Station program in Nigeria and the installation of Google’s Equiano fiber cable, which runs from Portugal to South Africa and connects Africa with Europe. Millions of individuals in Nigeria and elsewhere now enjoy easier access to the internet at lower costs thanks to these initiatives.
The national broadband plan for 2019 was developed under her guidance in bodies including the Presidential Committee and the National Economic Summit Group, which had an impact on the regional ICT strategy.
