800m people now use ChatGPT actively every week – OpenAI CEO

Poland to probe OpenAI over privacy concerns

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Monday that ChatGPT has reached 800 million weekly active users, marking a significant increase in adoption among consumers, developers, enterprises, and governments.

ChatGPT’s impressive growth comes as OpenAI is in a race to secure AI chips and build extensive AI infrastructure.

This latest figure was revealed just two months after OpenAI reported it was on track to hit 700 million weekly active users, which itself was a sharp increase from 500 million weekly active users at the end of March.

Altman revealed the key statistics during OpenAI’s Dev Day, confirming the platform’s expanding reach: “Today, 4 million developers have built with OpenAI. More than 800 people use ChatGPT every week, and we process over 6 billion tokens per minute on the API. Thanks to all of you, AI has gone from something people build play with to something people build with every day.”

OpenAI is clearly trying to boost those numbers even further by focusing more on developers. At Dev Day, Altman said the company today launched in preview an Apps SDK, or software development kit, to enable developers to “build real apps” inside ChatGPT.

Altman explained the forward-looking strategy behind the new tool: “This will enable a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized, that you can chat with.”
