19 dead as crane collapses in Thailand

A train in northeastern Thailand derailed on Wednesday when a construction crane toppled onto three of its carriages, killing at least 19 people and injuring around 80.

Local Police said that dozens more were injured when the crane struck a carriage, causing the train to derail and briefly ignite, according to Reuters.

“Nineteen bodies have been recovered, but there are still some inside the train carriages that cannot be removed yet because the crane started shifting, so the team pulled back for fear of danger,” Police Colonel Thatchapon Chinnawong said.

Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan said the train, heading to Ubon Ratchathani province, was carrying 195 passengers.

He added that an investigation into the accident has been launched, with rescue operations still underway.

The crane had been part of a high-speed rail project in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 143 miles northeast of Bangkok.
