139 migrants die as boat capsizes off Djibouti

At least 139 migrants, including 15 children, have died after a boat carrying 305 people capsized off the coast of Djibouti while travelling to Yemen, the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration has said.

About 84 people remain missing following the incident, while 82 others survived the shipwreck, according to the IOM on Sunday.

The boat, which was carrying 305 people, capsized near Guhere, north of the port town of Obock, during the night of October 8-9, according to the IOM, citing accounts from survivors.

“Our teams are on the ground alongside local authorities to provide emergency assistance,” said IOM Chief of Mission in Djibouti Alexandre Coissac.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by migrants along this migration corridor as they seek economic opportunities,” Coissac said.

Djiboutian authorities are continuing search and rescue operations, while providing medical assistance to survivors and arranging burials for the deceased, the IOM said.
