12 states have enacted tax harmonisation law — Oyedele

At least 12 states in Nigeria have enacted the tax harmonisation law, which is regarded as a vital component of the comprehensive tax reform initiative launched by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

During a speech in Abuja on Thursday, Taiwo Oyedele, who serves as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and is the Minister of State for Finance designate, announced that 13 additional states have submitted the proposed law to their respective state legislatures for review, with other states progressing at various levels in adopting the reforms.

Oyedele highlighted that the tax reforms aim to update Nigeria’s fiscal system, foster business expansion, safeguard vulnerable populations, and restructure the nation’s economy.

He further explained that the states’ tax harmonisation law is intended to abolish nuisance taxes and stop the harassment of citizens for any reason, noting that it will streamline the tax process, uphold taxpayers’ rights, and rectify unjust tax practices.

“Transparency, fiscal discipline, responsibility and accountability remain critical pillars of an effective tax system,” he stated.
