12 feared dead as tourist plane crashes in Kenya

A small aircraft en route to the Maasai Mara crashed Tuesday in Kenya’s coastal Kwale region, with all 12 people on board feared dead, officials said.

The plane went down in a remote, forested area roughly 40 kilometers from Diani airstrip.

Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde said that the passengers were foreign tourists, though their nationalities have not yet been confirmed, according to Associated Press.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the aircraft was a Cessna Caravan and noted that investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.

The exact number of passengers versus crew has not yet been determined.

The aircraft reportedly went down just minutes after takeoff, bursting into flames and leaving a charred wreckage, officials said.

Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion and, upon reaching the crash site, discovered remains that were severely burned and unrecognizable.

The operator, Mombasa Air Safari, said it is working closely with aviation authorities, who will provide further updates as investigations progress.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve, where the flight was headed, is one of Kenya’s most visited wildlife destinations, renowned for its annual wildebeest migration from Tanzania’s Serengeti.
