The average cost of a 5kg cooking gas cylinder saw a national increase of 8.70%, rising from N4,565.56 in December 2022 to N4,962.87 in December 2023.
This information was revealed in the December 2023 Liquified Petroleum Gas price watch report published by the National Bureau of Statistics NBS.
Notably, the price of cooking gas showed considerable variation across different states. The highest prices were observed in Adamawa, Jigawa, and Ogun, while the lowest were in South-Eastern states like Imo and Ebonyi.
From a regional perspective, the North-East reported the highest average retail price for a 5kg LPG cylinder, at N5,256.61. The North-West followed with an average price of N5,144.50, and the South-East registered the lowest at N4,155.59.
Below is the ranking of the top ten states in Nigeria with the highest cooking gas prices, spanning from December 2022 to December 2023.
1. Adamawa: Topping the list, Adamawa State saw the highest cooking gas prices in the country, reaching N5,725.33 for a 5kg cylinder in December 2023. This is a 16.05% increase compared to the previous year’s price of N4,933.33.
2. Jigawa: In Jigawa State, the price for 5kg of cooking gas climbed to N5,686.88 in December 2023, marking a significant 22.83% increase from the N4,933.33 price point in December 2022.
3. Lagos: Lagos State recorded a substantial 16.75% increase in cooking gas prices, with the cost reaching N5,671.05 for 5kg in December 2023, up from N4,856.25 in the same month of the previous year.
4. Oyo: In Oyo State, the price for a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas rose to N5,625.79 in December 2023, an 18.47% increase from the N4,748.68 price recorded in December 2022.
5. Benue: Residents in Benue State experienced a 13.66% rise in cooking gas prices, with the average cost for 5kg reaching N5,550.56 in December 2023, up from N4,883.33 in December 2022.
6. Ogun: Ogun State saw a 27.03% increase in the price of a 5kg LPG cylinder, which went from N4,330.00 in December 2022 to N5,500.55 in December 2023.
7. Bauchi: In Bauchi State, the average retail price for 5kg of LPG climbed from N4,500.00 in December 2022 to N5,500.26 in December 2023, marking a 22.23% increase over the year.
8. Kano: Kano’s cooking gas prices for a 5kg cylinder increased by 21.93%, from N4,466.67 in December 2022 to N5,446.24 in December 2023.
9. Kaduna: Kaduna experienced a 10.56% increase in cooking gas prices over the past year, with the cost for 5kg rising from N4,883.33 in December 2022 to N5,403.23 in December 2023.
10. Cross River: In Cross River State, the average retail price for 5kg of cooking gas rose by 15.39% over the last year, from N4,657.14 in December 2022 to N5,373.75 in December 2023.
