Human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana said it is not the business of the National Assembly to investigate economic sabotage in the oil sector.

Falana who made this revelation on a Channels TV interview monitored by our correspondent on Friday said the probing of economic sabotage in the oil sector is the responsibility of the law enforcement agencies.

The legal practitioner maintained that the current probing by the legislative arm of the government will only not yield any result but a way of distracting the general public.

The National Assembly had set up an Adhoc Committee chaired by Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East, Bassey Akpan to probe oil theft in the Niger region of the country.

Falana who decried the move by the National Assembly said the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the police should be doing the investigation.

When asked what he makes of the probing by the National Assembly, Falana opined, “Nothing will come out of it, because this is not the first time they are conducting such hearing.”

He added, “Alot of these proceedings are to divert the attention of the public, with profound respect, it is not the business of the National Assembly to really investigates these matters.

“Once a crime is committed, an economic crime that is turning the nation into a nation of beggars, you call the EFCC, you call the ICPC, you call the police; can you gentlemen, can you jointly get to the root of this criminality.”
